October 1st is Treaty Day and the first day of Mi’kmaq History Month. Treaty Day recognizes the historic Peace and Friendship Treaties between the Mi'kmaq and the Crown, emphasizing the importance of these enduring relationships and Indigenous rights to hunt, fish, and gather. While the treaties sought peaceful coexistence and a nation-to-nation relationship, they are not recognized as a surrender of Mi'kmaq land, and the day serves to promote public awareness and reconciliation for all treaty people.
