African Heritage Month Fact of the Day -
Marie-Joseph Angelique was a slave who was accused and convicted of starting a 1734 fire that destroyed 46 buildings in Montreal.  Although she only confessed to the crime under torture and the evidence against her was circumstantial, she was hanged on June 21, 1734.
