TERRY FOX WALK/RUN – SEPTEMBER 26TH
When Terry Fox was 18, he was diagnosed with cancer. It was the other patients in the hospital that inspired Terry to try and make a difference. He was so moved by their suffering, he was determined to try and help ease their pain by raising money for cancer research. Terry had a goal of raising $1 from every Canadian. When Terry did his Run the national population was 24.1 million. Terry’s dream was realized when his Marathon of Hope fund reached $24.17 million. To date over $750 million has been raised for cancer research.
Many people wonder how it was possible for Terry Fox to continue to run a marathon a day for 143 days. He always said it was the thought of cancer patients back at the hospital where he was treated for his cancer that motivated him. Terry said: “There can be no reason for me to stop. No matter what pain I suffer, it is nothing compared to the pain of those who have cancer, of those who endure treatment”. What will be your motivation for this year’s Terry Fox Run?
Courage, determination, compassion, kindness and respect. These are just a few of the character traits shown by Terry Fox during his Marathon of Hope. Terry has set a great example for all Canadians to follow in his footsteps, to be the best Canadians we can be. Let’s all Be Like Terry, today and every day.
This is the 39th year of the Terry Fox Run! To honor the legacy of Terry Fox, let’s go all out with our fundraising this year! Our school has been doing the Terry Fox Run for over 10 years and in total we have raised thousands of dollars for cancer research. This year our goal is to raise $2500.00. Keep an eye on the barometer poster in the front hall as we track our progress to the top!
