AFRICAN HERITAGE MONTH  - FEBRUARY 2019
OUR HISTORY is YOUR HISTORY

Our History is YOUR History recognizes the unique history of African Nova Scotians and how it is interwoven with the past, present and future of all Nova Scotians.  Our theme also aligns with the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent (DPAD).  The goal of DPAD is to strengthen global cooperation in support of people of African descent as they strive for full inclusion in all aspects of society.

COLE HARBOUR PEEWEE B TEAM

The Cole Harbour Peewee B team, which includes Carter Burke and Tate Rutledge from our school, have the chance to donate $100,000 to Out of the Cold Emergency Shelter which serves the metro area for homeless people and people in need.

The Chevrolet’s Good Deeds Cup, which was featured on Hockey Night in Canada, recognizes teams that have done good deeds throughout their community. The Cole Harbour Peewee B’s have made the Top 10 in Canada out of hundreds of entries. The top 3 teams with the most views of their video move on for the chance to win the $100,000 for their charity. That is where Astral Drive students can help out. Every time you watch the video the Peewee B team receives a vote and the teams with the most votes move on to the next round.

The video can be seen at https://youtu.be/DrXBfrcqTAc

BISSETT LAKE – THIN ICE
Students are not to walk on the extremely thin ice that is on Bissett Lake or any lake/pond/body of water!  Just because the weather is cold enough for there to be ice on ponds and lakes does not mean that ice is thick enough to safely skate or walk on. A lot of factors can impact ice thickness such as water depth, fluctuations in water levels, changing air temperature, docks and rocks absorbing heat from the sun and shock waves from vehicles travelling on the ice. Ice thickness can change as quickly as the weather does, so always be sure to check – with an adult - even if the ice was safe the day before.
